EcuadorThe Wildlife of Isla Genovesa
Covering only an area of about 14 sq km, Genovesa is among the smallest islands in the Galapagos group. It has no built tourist centers or visitor sites and, yet, many people believe that it is one of the best places to be in when you are in the Galapagos because of the seabirds that go to this specific island, making it an excellent viewing point for many bird watching enthusiasts. For this reason, it is often given the nickname of Bird Island.
This island actually has a volcanic caldera whose wall was destroyed many years ago, leading to the creation of the bay (Darwin Bay) that gave it its horseshoe shape. Among the abundant number of birds you can see here are red-footed boobies, storm petrels, Darwin's finches, and others. Thousands of these birds can be seen here at any given point in time. Watching them located in a single place can be an overwhelming experience worthy of a repeat. You should not miss climbing up the Prince Phillip's Steps, which lets you climb into the volcanic walls of the island. Along the way, you will pass by numerous seabird colonies. Isn't it just beautiful to see so much diverse wildlife in a tiny island like Genovesa? Darwin Bay itself is an attraction on its own. Sea lions are often seen near the coasts of this bay, with birds nesting in the nearby mangrove forests. Take time to do some diving around the island and be amazed by the clarity of water and the wildlife living just along the coasts of Genovesa. Sometimes we tend to forget and appreciate the wonders of this planet because of the busy lifestyles that we lead in the city. Going away on a vacation to places like Genovesa will take all the stress away. Rejuvenate and recharge. Be inspired by the wildlife that you will see. This is what a vacation is for.
