If you've been wanting to go to the opera or see some theatrical performances while you are in Ecuador, Quito is the place to be. With all its history, grandiosity, and fine architecture, it would be a surprise if the city does not have a decent performing arts scene at the very scene. True enough, the industry is relatively important here and you will find a lot of opportunities to watch plays, production numbers, and opera shows, among others.
Much of the performance arts scene in the city is concentrated the city's Old Town district. There are a lot of performance types regularly conducted, such as traditional plays, ballets, dance shows, opera, and comedies. There are a lot of performing groups that regularly conduct these shows, but some groups just stand out among the rest. The National Symphony, for example, has weekly performances in different venues located all over the district. Then there's also the Ballet Andino Humanizarte, which specializes in traditional Andean dances, and the Ballet Folkorico Nacional Jacchiga. As for venues, perhaps nothing could be more popular among residents of Quito aside from the Teatro Nacional Sucre, located in Old Town's Plaza del Teatro Manabi. Quito's most popular theater was first established in 1867 and is now restored after getting burned down in 1999. Various types of performances are regularly held inside the theater, while free concerts and street shows are frequently done outside. There's also the Casa de la Cultura Ecuarotiana, another cultural center in Quito, which, aside from hosting a number of concerts, exhibitions, and performances, is also the location of the Museo Nacional del Banco Central del Ecuador. This museum contains a number of archaeological artifacts plus a collection of traditional and contemporary artwork. For those who want a more mellow atmosphere, there's the Casa de la Musica, in which traditional, folkloric, classical, and jazz concerts are usually held. Add in performances from orchestras and international artists and you've got a perfect place to unwind in after a long day. If you must know, the list does not stop there, but I'm inviting you to come over to Quito and discover for yourself just how good a place it is for the performing arts. No surprises, it is one of the continent's cultural capitals.
