As with other expat destinations, it is important for potential expats to know the cost of living in that particular place. Most of Latin America is cheap compared to their northern counterparts, but there a few exceptions. For example, Buenos Aires is considered to be the New York of Latin America for a reason. Expect wage levels in these countries to be modest, but that is because the cost of living here also is.

Cost of living in Ecuador is very much dependent on the lifestyle that you want to live, but for most purposes we can say that living here is quite cheap. For example, a lot of people say that $700 to $800 every month is enough to make you live a comfortable life here. That is not without rent fees yet.

For example, eating here in Ecuador for two people can cost you to about $30 per meal at the very most, and that is if you are eating in one of those mid-range restaurants. A McDonald's burger here is way cheaper than its American counterparts. Utility payments will cost you about $40, while I think the Internet connectivity here is on the expensive side of things at about $40 per month.

Then there's the rent. This really depends on the location in the cities or the type of home that you are looking for, but for an average-sized apartment unit, you might have to spend about $300 to $600 per month on rent. More high-end units located in even more exclusive locations can charge even higher. So unless you have a good source of income, you'd want to live somewhere cheaper.

If you're running out of money and need some extra boost, there's always the option to go teach English lessons to people. Returns in this kind of job are pretty modest, but on their own, you can actually live with that kind of wage. It's just a matter of prioritizing bills and things to purchase.
