Ecuador is South America's cultural gem. Many people go to this country primarily because of the historic and cultural artifacts and sites present all throughout the country. For a nation banking so much on its cultural history, it is only appropriate that Ecuador has a notable museum that will showcase the history and culture of this fine country in a single place. The Central Bank Museum or the Museo Nacional del Banco Central del Ecuador in Quito is adequate enough to fill this role.
The Central Bank Museum is a must for any culture junkie. Even if you don't go to any other museum in the country, this one will already give you enough overview of everything that there is to be amazed at about Ecuador. The museum combines artifacts with technology in order to do its best to showcase Ecuador. Prominent in the museum's exhibits are the various artworks originating from different times in Ecuador's history: from the pre-Columbian Incan art to contemporary pieces that depict modern Ecuador. These exhibits, along with archaeological finds, have been grouped together inside the museum for easy navigation. You can start your tour with the Archaeological Gallery, which contains pieces said to be dating as far back as 11,000 BC. Then there's also the Golden Court, which, from its name, is abundant with gold pieces collected over the years and feature golden items used by local tribes in various ceremonies during the past. The Colonial Art Gallery, meanwhile, features artworks created during the Spanish colonial period, primarily religious pieces. There's a dramatic shift in theme when you go to the Republican Art Gallery, which features pieces on heroes who were there during the Ecuadorian fight for independence. Lastly, the Contemporary Art Gallery features artworks created in present-day Ecuador. They all say that everything that you want to see is already here at the Central Bank Museum because of its vast collection.
